About our Superfood Bars

One of the advantages of getting your protein from a vegan plant-based source rather than an animal source is that you get all the added benefits of plant-derived nutrients such as phytosterols, which have been shown to reduce cholesterol, as well as antioxidants.

Our Superfood Protein Bars are fruit and nut-based snack bars, each with an added superfood and source of plant protein. They provide slow release, clean energy to help you keep you going all day. Perfect first thing with a coffee or in the afternoon as a pick-me-up!

Moist and moreish and packed with fruit, each bar is a hefty 75g  too, so it’s deliciously filling and satisfying.

Free from: gluten, dairy, egg, whey, lactose, soy, wheat, oats, grain flour, palm oil, vegetable oil, refined sugar, alcohol, artificial colours, stabilisers, flavours and preservatives.

Ingredients

We choose our ingredients very carefully for their nutritional benefits. Let’s have a closer look at the ingredients in each of our Superfood Bar flavours:

 

1) Banana, Peanut & Chia Seed

Superfood: Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are small black neutral-tasting seeds from the Salvia hispanica plant of Central and South America, and belong to the mint family. They are thought to have been traditionally eaten for thousands of years by the ancient Aztecs and Maya as a source of energy. They also help keep you feeling full due to their unique ‘gelling’ action and their high soluble fibre content, and a study showed that they can help appetite control. Chia Seeds are also rich in polyunsaturated fats, especially omega-3 fatty acids and minerals calcium, magnesium and manganese. Organic.

Protein source: Rice protein
Our rice protein is made from brown rice and is naturally 80% protein. Rice protein is high in the sulphur-containing amino acids, cysteine and methionine, but low in lysine. However when combined with peanut butter (see below) it provides a complete amino acid profile.
No GMO, neutral taste. Organic.

Peanut butter (crunchy):
We only use 100% pure peanut butter, with no added salt, sugar or palm oil. Peanut butter is a nutrient-dense food naturally high in protein (29g per 100g), monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, fibre, and a source of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin E, niacin, riboflavin, magnesium and manganese. It contains high amounts of the amino acids arginine and lysine, as well as phytosterols, which are plant sterols and stanols that reduce cholesterol absorption and blood cholesterol concentrations.

Bananas:
Our bars are packed with fresh ripe bananas, with their many health benefits and contain vitamin B6 and fibre. It is well known that bananas are an excellent source of potassium! Potassium is one of the key electrolytes in the body, helping to regulate blood pressure. Bananas are soothing to the gastrointestinal tract due to their high content of pectin – as soluble fibre that contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels, and contributes to the reduction of blood glucose rise after a meal. This not only lowers cholesterol but normalises bowel function. Pectin in bananas also helps create a feeling of satiety.

Dates:
Dates are naturally sweet and great energy boosters. They are particularly rich in potassium, iron, niacin (Vitamin B3) and fibre. Dates contain tannins, a type of naturally occurring antioxidant known as a polyphenol. They have highest amount of polyphenols of all the dried fruits, which studies have shown may aid in the maintenance of bowel health. Despite their high fructose levels (like most fruits), fructose is classed as a low GI sweetener, and their sugar content is offset by their high fibre content. The soluble and insoluble fibres present in dates can also help to improve the digestive system. A study found that date sugar had no adverse effects on blood sugar levels in diabetics and non-diabetic people.

Sunflower seeds:
Like peanuts, sunflower seeds are nutrient-dense and an excellent source of protein, at 21g per 100g. In addition, they are a great source of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats which, in place of saturated fats, contribute to the maintenance of blood cholesterol levels. They contain high levels of Vitamin E, an antioxidant, and Vitamin B1, as well as Vitamin B6, manganese, copper and phosphorus. Their high potassium levels contribute to the healthy functioning of the heart and regulate blood pressure. Like peanuts, they are abundant in phytosterols. Plant sterols and plant stanol esters have been shown to lower/reduce blood cholesterol. High cholesterol is a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease. Organic.

Maple syrup:
Maple syrup is a natural, unrefined sweetener from the sap of maple trees, with a low glycemic index of 54. It contains trace minerals, especially manganese, and polyphenol antioxidants including flavanols.

Extra virgin organic coconut oil:
We only use organic extra virgin rather than refined coconut oil, as it is higher quality and is said to be richer in antioxidant polyphenols. Coconut oil contains a high proportion of a type of fat called Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFAs), in the form of lauric acid. Fat is an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet — it is a source of essential fatty acids and helps the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K. MCFAs are absorbed and metabolised by the liver and converted to ketones. This helps it to be less likely to be stored in the body as fat and more readily used as a source of energy.

Vanilla powder:
A little to taste. “Vanilla extract” contains sugar and alcohol, which we don’t want to add to our food, so we use pure vanilla powder instead.

 

2) Apple, Cinnamon & Maca

Superfood: Maca
Maca is a cruciferous root vegetable related to broccoli and cauliflower, native to the Andes of Peru. It has been used medicinally for thousands of years, and dubbed “Peruvian ginseng” thanks to its reputation for increasing strength, energy, libido and stamina. Maca is naturally high in the minerals calcium, copper, potassium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc. It contains over 20 amino acids — including 8 essential amino acids — and plenty of anti-inflammatory phytonutrients and antioxidants.

It is also an adaptogen, which means it regulates hormones and helps the body adapt in times of stress. Studies have shown maca to be beneficial for all sorts of hormonal problems including PMS, menopause and hot flushes, by balancing hormone levels.
Research has also shown that it boosts mood, memory, energy and fertility.

Bramley apples
– We use fresh locally sourced Bramley apples for their tangy, sweet taste, reminiscent of apple pie! We use the whole fruit rather than just the juice, for its high fibre content. Each bar contains over 40% Bramley apples.

Cinnamon
The sweet warm taste of cinnamon pairs perfectly with Bramley apples. We use Celyon “true” cinnamon rather than Cassia cinnamon, as Ceylon contains no courmarin unlike Cassia, and it also packed with antioxidants.

Flax seed powder
Flax is a powerful plant, rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, antioxidants known as lignans, and fibre. It is used to lower cholesterol and to improve digestive health.

Sultanas
Like dates, sultanas are rich in fibre, which helps improve digestive health, as well as being rich in antioxidants, including polyphenols.

3) ‘Black Forest’ Cherry & Cacao Superfood Bars

Superfood: Cacao (organic)

Cacao beans are the seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree, exactly the same seeds from which cocoa and chocolate is processed. Cocoa is processed at a high temperature and loses its nutritional value, whereas cacao is the raw, unprocessed bean, simply cold pressed to retain its nutritional benefits and enzymes. We use both cacao powder and cacao nibs in our recipe. Cacao is super high in antioxidants present in the form of flavonoids, especially  Epicatechin. Indeed, cacao has the highest flavanol content of all foodstuffs on a weight basis. It is rich in magnesium, and contains many other beneficial compounds such as protein, iron and calcium. May have anti-inflammatory properties.

Protein source: Pea protein

Naturally contains 80% protein. Made from yellow peas, with absolutely no GMO, and a completely neutral taste.

Pea protein has an excellent amino acid profile and is a complete protein, which means it contains all nine of the essential amino acids that you need to consume to effectively build muscle. It is rich in branched chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, valine). Out of all the available protein powders, it is the highest in the amino acid arginine, containing three times more arginine than whey! Arginine is essential to building muscle.

Almond butter

We only use 100% almond butter, with pure almonds and no added oil, salt or sugar. Almonds are an excellent source of vitamin E, manganese, biotin, and copper, as well as containing magnesium, molydenum, riboflavin (vitamin B2), and phosphorus. They also have an impressive macronutrient profile, being high in protein and a source of fibre. High in good fats, almond butter also contains an impressive 34g monounsaturated fat per 100g. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, when replacing saturated fats, contribute to the maintenance of blood cholesterol levels. Almond butter is rich in phytosterols, which have been found to lower/reduce blood cholesterol.

Cherries
An essential ingredient for that “Black Forest” taste! Cherries are a good source of fibre, vitamins and minerals, including potassium, calcium, vitamin A and folic acid. They are also well known for their antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are vital for good health as they protect our cells from damage caused by oxidants, or free radicals. Cherries contain antioxidants known as anthocyanins and cyanidin which may have anti-inflammatory effects.

Agave nectar
We use a tiny bit of natural organic Agave nectar (1ml per bar), which comes from the organically grown Blue Webber Agave Plant in Mexico.
It is naturally low in glucose, with a low glycemic index of 10,  so there is no resulting spike in blood sugar.

We use:
Organic coconut flour- not really a flour in the traditional grain sense, just pure finely ground organic coconut.
